How to Prepare for a Tattoo Appointment: Practical Checklist

Good preparation helps protect the time, planning and money invested in a tattoo appointment. The exact instructions from your artist and studio take priority, but this checklist covers the practical decisions most clients should settle before tattoo day.

In the days before the appointment

• Protect the area from sunburn, cuts, rashes and unnecessary irritation. Contact the studio if the skin is damaged or inflamed instead of assuming the session can proceed.

• Sleep normally, eat regularly and maintain your usual hydration. There is no need for extreme water intake or a special “tattoo diet.”

• Avoid arriving under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs.

• Confirm the date, start time, estimated session length, deposit status, payment method and guest policy. Review rescheduling terms before a conflict occurs.

Prepare the project information

Bring a focused reference set that communicates subject, mood, composition or color direction. Another artist’s tattoo can illustrate a preference, but it should not be treated as a design to copy.

Know the placement and approximate coverage. For large projects, cover-ups or extensions, provide the photographs requested during intake. Do not surprise the artist on appointment day with an existing tattoo or scar that changes the design.

Be ready to discuss what is essential and what the artist may adjust for scale, anatomy and longevity. Final layout changes can be normal; a completely different project should go back through review.
